With my younger students I like starting out with Piano Adventures by Faber. I also like giving them songs that they know and like - that gets students excited about the repertoire they are learning. With older students I ask them which styles they prefer, and then we also find a suitable method for them. In general, I like giving students a variety of styles and pieces to keep them interested. Education is a central part of my life and will continue to be for my whole career. When I'm not teaching music, I teach English to kids living in China over the Internet! I have been teaching music for several years in individual, group and clinic settings. I recently graduated from the University of Iowa where I was lucky enough to study many different kinds of music. I became interested in Caribbean music and steelpan and through the University and had the great experience of competing in Panorama in Trinidad Tobago. Read More

I am a highly motivated, hard-working, and outgoing individual. I love people and believe thatteachingmusic lessons is one the best ways to connect with students of all ages and develop a relationship with them. I started learning piano in Kindergarten, began Saxophone in my 5th grade Band, and started tutoring other band students in 6th Grade. In 7th Grade I earned scholarship to attend Illinois Summer Youth Music Camp at the University of Illinois. Read More

What keeps one interested in playing music, in the long term, is the ability to realize melodies one hears in one's head. In my experience, this is the most joyous aspect of one's musical practice, and is the underlying goal in my teaching strategy. Some aspects of one's practice, like repertoire, are geared towards performing for other people. Others are muscle and mind building exercises that increase the fluidity of one's motions while sounding their instrument. Read More

I started teaching private piano in 1991 and have trained over 200 private students since starting. I have taught K-12 music in public schools since 1991. My students' ages have ranged from 3 to 66+. As I am fully retired from the public school music classroom, I have expanded my times available for private students - piano, keyboard, ukulele, guitar, and all brass instruments are welcome. My curriculum spans many styles of music, based on the needs and desires of the student, but also preparing the student for musicianship in any situation. Read More

I thoroughly enjoy teaching piano to others so that they themselves may grow stronger not only as a musician but as a person. Getting students to set goals and reach them in terms of practicing and learning new pieces is a challenge. I like to break up larger goals into smaller tasks. I also believe in doing things right, which usually means slowly. I usually start with different warm-ups, go onto old music, and finally onto new music. Read More

This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. Read More
