I completed my Master of Music studies at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Arts in voice performance from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. As a young artist, I spend three summers performing and studying in Austria with the Franco- American Vocal Academy. I have different methods for piano and voice: depending on the level of the piano student, I will use Faber method books and supplement performance pieces, technique lessons, games, theory discussions, etc. I do not use method books with voice students, although I do have a curriculum that I follow and adjust depending on the level and age of the voice student. I believe that while beginning and intermediate students continue to learn, it is important for them to practice different genres on their instrument -- this allows them to speak different musical languages, improves their understanding of style, and gives them a better context for their own gifts and interests. Scales and other technical skills are big part of lessons with me for more advanced students or for my younger students who want to be challenged and learn more. ... Voice: I use the Sing at First Sight series to teach my vocal students how to read music. It teaches using solfege (do, re, mi...) syllables along with music to assist singers in learning different intervals in music. Breathing exercises are used frequently in lessons with me to assure that my students are singing correctly and not harming their vocal chords. Read More
