After graduation I went and taught in Chicago for a few years and Greenville SC where I was the music teacher in both schools. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. Whatever will inspire my student to practice is what I will provide whether that is praise or stickers. Read More

I look at each student individually to assess their potential and goals before setting a book or particular study plan. Once the student has begun basic technique exercises, I assign book levels and vocal repertoire that fits their interests as well as matching what I feel the student needs to be working on. We gradually increase the tempo over the next several weeks. Pieces like that will be rehearsed at the end of each lesson after working through a few passages in Alfreds book. At the beginning, I ask my adults what music theyre interested in learning. I like to gear my warmup exercises and cool down exercises towards that style and I always put aside a few minutes at the end to work on whatever music they desire. Read More
