My approach is twofold: addressing the mind and addressing the body. I always have beginners learn how to stretch and release tension before they even sing, just like any athlete would. I have them develop a pre-singing routine including these stretches so they can both prepare themselves physically and mentally for every lesson and practice session. I began teaching piano my sophomore year of college. During my college career, I built up a studio of nearly 20 students, tutored college-level piano courses, and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Sight Singing and Aural Training. Since then, I taught for two years at a Summer Music Conservatory in Texas, led week-long keyboard intensive seminars throughout Western Kenya, and most recently, taught at the nation's largest piano conservatory. My method of teaching is very detailed instruction. There are many books that tend to start with the assumption that you know something about music or that music is easy to just "pick up." I like to start from the students' most basic skill level and fill in all the gaps as they progress.
