And both sides share the joy of these discoveries. It is very important for me to be friendly, open and patient with the students. I believe that the educators are to do their best to build up and maintain the sense of acceptance in all students. Interaction between students and teacher is fertile with opportunities to sow the seeds of acceptance. Another important parts of teachers mission are nourishing students natural curiosity and helping them to develop their problem-solving abilities. Read More

I like piano lessons to be enjoyable while still providing an atmosphere of learning. Exactly how a lesson unfolds varies from student to student in order to fit the needs and desires of each individual student. Each student and I will determine what pace works best for that student. We will also work together to determine how to construct our lessons so we can introduce new information in ways that best help that particular student understand the concepts. Read More

I love working with students and helping them getting comfortable around music. I started playing piano since I was 6 years old and experienced different teachers, teaching methods, and musicians. I studied Music Education for the first two years at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, then decided to focus in Piano Pedagogy starting my junior year. Not only I have a music degree, I also have a experiences with teaching young children from working as a teacher in early childcare and Child Development Laboratory at University of Illinois. I began teaching shortly before I graduated high school in 2012. My high school had a very successful marching band program and was closely tied with a local drum corps, which helped me become experienced in leading group rehearsals and clinics for drumlines and front ensembles around this time. Leading in to college, I continued this and also began teaching students individually which only helped to underline my love of teaching! Read More

For beginner students who are children, I typically start with theSuzuki Book 1 or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements depending on the students wants/needs. Throughout the lessonsI will coverbasictheory such as chords, scales, and other guitar/piano/drums/bass fundamentals neccesary to grow. For adults, I like to do a thorough interview to get a feel for what it is they want out guitar/bass/piano/drum lessons and from that develop a lesson plan based on the lessons i was taught by my music teacher in college. I strive to develop a customized learning approach for each of my students, depending on their needs and goals. I implement a combination of the Faber method, Alfred method, and compilations of works by talented piano pedagogs such as Keith Snell, Martha Ashleigh, Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield, Melody Bober, and Julie McIntosh Johnson. I have found that by using a combination of these resources I am able to focus on all eras of music history and style, as well as cover all bases of theory fundamentals. Read More

I've been teaching most of my adult life. I started tutoring while still in high school, and I continued as a teaching assistant as a college student. I taught at Hope College for six years in a number of different subjects: saxophone, jazz ensembles, music theory, aural skills, piano class, and music appreciation. I even ran the percussion ensemble for one semester, which was a blast! I love my AF band job, but I do miss teaching full-time. Read More
