Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music ! Therefore its important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for each student. Acknowledging accomplishments help fuel a students desire to progress. I tailor lessons to the students level as well as there interest in music. Many of my students have gone on to become professionals or involved in their church, school or community music programs. I have been with Musika in the Nashville/Brentwood area for ten years after a twelve year hiatus from teaching. Before touring as a full-time artist starting in 1998 I had already taught piano and voice for fourteen years in the Los Angeles area. Some of my former students are themselves music teachers and professional musicians. I can give recommendations if need be. I have been a professional musician for over thirty years. Read More

My approach to teaching music is holistic. I believe there are 3 important components that lead to mastery of the instrument: 1. Technique, 2. Artistry, 3. Comprehension. Technique: Understanding of the body and how it works at the piano. By this, I mean how to play using the weight of the body rather than brute force. Playing the piano does not require strong muscles or physical strength. It requires an intricate and fluid motion that comes from understanding how the hands/arms are connected to the rest of the body, and how they work together to produce sound from the piano. The method used for teaching a student how to enjoy music should be practical, intuitive, and natural. I begin by training a student how to listen (in the same way that a child would hear words before he could speak). From that point, a student learns to "speak" or play musical sentences. Finally, the reading skills are developed. Through this approach, musical literacy is founded and then the art of mastering the instrument begins by developing sensitivity and fine musicianship. I like to use piano methods that employ the multi-key and intervallic approach to teaching piano. Alfred's Piano Method nicely blends these two methods. To keep book costs down, the Alfred's All-in-One Piano Method (children's or adult's) is a good choice for beginning students. Alfred's method is also used by many universities and community colleges, so what you learn will nicely carry over to that environment. More advanced students can bring the method and materials they have been working with and we'll go from there. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I find it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

Because I teach only part-time, I have a limited number of students so I'm able to create custom lesson plans for each individual. My goal for a first meeting with any student is to get to know the student. I want to know what music the student is into, what they want to focus on, why they're taking lessons and what their goals are. From there I can create a lesson plan that is a productive balance of fun, intriguing, challenging and fulfiling. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
