Set a specific time every day/week. Make sure the student doesn't eats a hour before the lesson. Put on your mind to "receive" mode and that there aren't any distractions in the room. If a section of a piece is problematic then we would work on that part first. A metronome can be helpful when practicing. If possible, internally sing the part you are playing. I always find out what the student likes and use that material as a format for developing good playing techniques and understanding, For beginners it's important to get it right from the start so playing and enjoyment can develop naturally. By immediately choosing songs they love the inspiration and motivation to practice will grow along with there playing. (i.e. concert pianist, recording session pianist, college degree in art performance, hobby etc...).
