I have been teaching for over 40 years. In my studio, my focus is on repertoire, however I also cover ear training, theory and composition. I teach all styles of music with a focus on the classical repertoire. The theory, composition and ear training will often coincide with the style of music being studied. I began teaching while I was pursuing my undergraduate degree at Malone University, where I earned a degree in Commercial Music Technology, but also studied piano pedagogy. I taught students through the Piano Preparatory department at Malone for two years. After graduating and moving to New York, I began to teach privately. My background is in opera and musical theatre, but I have been playing piano for twenty-six years and also teach ukulele and flute. I have been studying music for twenty-six years, including Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in classical vocal performance. Children who study with me don't just learn how to 'play' the music, they learn how to really 'PERFORM' it--wide range of volume, lots of expression, and true musicality! Teens (13-18) typically prefer to choose their own curriculum. They are mature enough to appreciate a classical background, and we study the great composers and all their famous pieces, which inform their understanding of music history as well. Music has been part of my life from a yound age. I started playing piano when I was five. At age nine I entered St. Thomas Choir School, a boarding choir school in midtown Manhattan. At age fourteen I started studying music theory and composition with a local kappelmeister. In university I continued to study classical theory at Syracuse University and then Jazz Theory at Hampshire College. I moved to the West coast and played iin the big band jazz ensembles at San Francisco State University which is where I eventually got my degree in Music Ed. Read More
