My teaching experience dates back to my high school years. I started teaching at the age of 14. Being a piano instructor was one of the best jobs I ever took on. I am very passionate about music. It calms the soul, relieves stress, and has been proven to improve brain function. I taught all the way through high school, then took a break in college. I majored in Information and Library Science and took several music courses to acquire a minor, Chorus, Guitar 1, Women in Western Music, Audio 101, and continued to perform on main instrument, piano. For my beginning students, I generally start with the book their school teacher wants them to use, or I have students use the Yamaha book 1. If the student begins in middle school or high school, I like to use the Rubank books. I believe that working on solo repertoire is an important part of learning and performing, so I begin my students on solo repertoire as soon as possible. I choose solo works that are in the ability of the student, yet offer enough of a challenge to help the student learn and grow. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with the Hal Leonard Method Books. Once the student can get the basics down I start with basic rock and pop tunes, or whatever music the student happens to be interested in. Forintermediateor advanced players, I try to gage where the student wants to go with the instrument and try to help them any way I can with theory or performance. I try to keep the student engaged and having fun no matter what but at the same time becoming a better musician. Read More

For the past 14 years, I've been a performer in both solo and band settings, and I've taught on various musical subjects/instruments for the past 6 years. I am a recent graduate of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where I received my Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance. During my studies in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area, I had the opportunity to teach at numerous private music schools on guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele. Read More

My teaching style is fairly laid-back, allowing each student to progress at their own pace. This allows me the freedom to tailor the instruction to the specific needs of the student and successfully find what creates their individual passion. I also believe that - especially in creative mediums like music and art - every negative critique I point out needs to be accompanied by at least two positive critiques. This positive reinforcement will help push students to progress rather than pushing them down, and all I want is to see the people I teach grow as both budding musicians and people. Read More

For more advanced students, I use technique books and etudes by Hanon, Czerny, Pischna, and Chopin. I don't use a cookie cutter approach, but match the book to the student. It is important for me to expose the student, no matter the age, to not only written material, but chordal structure and basic harmony. Knowing the basic chords is important for understanding where music comes from, and even how to compose simple compositions. Read More

For piano students, I like to use Alfred's piano methods. I find that their methods for both kids and adults not only covers the basic fundamentals of music, but they are also able to make everything comprehensive and enjoyable. For guitar, I like to use Hal Leonard's basic guitar book for students focusing on popular music and basic guitar, and for classical guitar I like to use the Christopher Parkening Method. Read More
