I pride myself on instilling a passion for music and music making in my students. To do this, I make my lessons responsive to the particular needs of each student and I consciously draw attention to what a student does well as well as what a student can improve. In this way, my students develop a strong desire to refine and polish their playing and listening while acknowledging and enjoying what they do well. Read More

I believe music should be a lot of fun. There should never be anything scary about learning something new to become a better person. I try to guide people through their musical journey as pleasantly as I can. That being said, hard work and perseverance are essential qualities for a beginning musician. Simply put, the more you put in, the more you'll get. I look forward to working with you. Read More

I have experience teaching private students from beginner to advanced levels and with students of all ages. Teaching voice requires the knowledge to help shape and expand technique in a healthy and appropriate manner, which I have developed during my years at Eastman. I also encourage my students to explore all different genres and work to apply the technique across all styles. I myself have performed in many musical productions and operas. Read More

Feeling and noticing that there has been gradual success is key to inspiring students to continue with their instrument. Playing a musical instrument presents numerous challenges mentally, physically, and sometimes emotionally. It is equally up to the teacher and the student to recognize the growth that has occured week to week. As long as the work is being put forth by both parties, finding success (even if small) will not be a difficult feat. Read More

Playing with one hand first, then the other, then using both hands. Working on rhythm and coordination follows that. For students that are in the intermediate-advanced stage, how the lessons go really depends on what the student's goals are and what they want to focus on. I have a lot of music theory knowledge and compositional skills, I can teach active listening, playing by ear, composition itself, improvising, arpeggios with fingerings, altered scales, hybrid structures of chords, tritone substitutions, voice leading, inner harmony, soloing, phrasing, and comping. Yes for teaching piano I use Nancy and Randall Faber's books. I have used all of them. For guitar and mandolin I generally do not use a "book". As the lessons progress I might introduce a book if that is what is called for. All orchestral instruments call for the structure of a book and I augment that with my own explanations. This is true for all ages of learners. Read More

Again, music is a deeply personal subject and I want to encourage every student to find their unique voice and love for music. My goal is to develop strong all-around music skills along with learning the technique of the instrument they chose. Every student works at a different pace, and I plan accordingly. I like to set reachable, realistic goals for students each week to develop a strong sense of accomplishment and hunger to learn more the following week. Read More
