I started teaching lessons when I was 18 at a music business and taught there between 3 to 5 hours a week for about 5 years. For the past 5 years I have been teaching at IU. I have taught many different styles from classical to jazz to rock, etc. and have also watched many great teachers and tried to learn from their methods. I am an avid music lover, performer, and teacher. I was lucky to study piano from a young age and have the amazing pre-collegiate experiences of appearing on MTV's Made and opening for the likes of McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, and Bela Fleck. I then received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where I studied saxophone performance as well as piano, songwriting, and audio production. I cater my teaching and methods to each individual student and his/her needs and goals. For beginners, I often use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. After progressing past that, the Rubank books and Hite etudes work for many students. Starting around 8th grade, I introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their level. During lessons, I always have students work on some form of scale, sight-reading, and ear training. I have several duet books (and a Disney book!) that students love to sight-read from. Read More

In my time as an instructor, I have not used any particular method book in my lessons. I will buy a notebook for each student where all important information from the lesson will be recorded. I write charts and exercises myself using tablature or standard notion depending on the student.
