I tailor my instruction to the needs and wants of the student because I am a strong believer that if the student is interested, they will stay excited about their instrument and be motivated to develop their skill. Goals are set for each student. It is a positive learning environment. I am a good motivator and the techniques used depend on the age of the student as different things motivate the various age levels. Read More

I've been a serious musician since taking up (baritone) saxophone at age 13, over 40 years ago. I first took up clarinet at 10, and later added flute, but saxophone has been my main focus over the years. I play around the Austin area in a variety of settings from big bands to musicals to rock/blues groups to studio recording to classical ensembles; pretty much whatever is asked for. Some of my previous teachers include Jim Riggs at the University of North Texas, Harvey Pittel at the University of Texas, Jeff Elwood at California State University Fullerton, and Joe Eckert at TCU. I always look for a way so the student understands the miscommunication when learning a new subject. I ask many questions and make the student think. I help the student make physical and mental connections when learning something new. Read More

I begin with a meeting. A meeting about you...How you are doing this fine day. We will make GREAT MUSIC together and learn more about music and the world's vibrations together. I want you to tell me what it is you want me to teach you, and in the process I will learn how you learn. You teach me while I teach you; then the music will flow from ALL DIRECTIONS! =) My philosophy is a simple one. "If you put the work in you will improve." We will go at the pace that you desire and what you show me you are prepared for. Read More

I usually balances the time by working first on fundamental/technical aspects of the instrument: intonation, articulation, rhythm, and tone; followed by study of the particular student's chosen repertoire, whether it be jazz standards, rock/pop/blues tunes, classical literature or etudes. I believe in teaching students to organize their practice time wisely, isolating specific issues on the instrument. Cultivating personal musical goals with each student is also very important, in order to maximize the student's enjoyment of the time they spend playing. Read More

For beginning students, I emphasize fundamentals, including technique, sound quality, and reading. With children, I like to start with method books such as Essential Elements or the John Thompson series for piano. For more advanced pupils, I will start with what they are currently working on, find areas for improvement, and then adjust the curriculum accordingly. However, no matter what the students interests or skill level are, I try and keep the lessons light, fun, and interesting! Read More

I allow students to work at their own pace while also setting realistic attainable goals. I want students to feel relaxed during their lessons so I try to establish an atmosphere that's both informal yet studious. One of my top priorities as a teacher is to understand what a student is most interested in and then focus our lessons on what they love. The best way to understand technique and theory is to apply it to something that you enjoy so I always try to attain this! Read More
