Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I try to make sure that fundamentals are always maintained and that the music we are covering in lessons is stimulating and challenging while still being enjoyable for the student so that they can develop musical expression along with a strong technical foundation. Because I don't have a set template that all students follow, I believe that my constant assessment and evaluation of students needs is effective in making sure that each student's passion is nurtured and developed. I create my own lesson plans (and some materials) specific to each student. Some standard books I use are Alfred's Drum Method book 1, The New Breed, Portraits in Rhythm, The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary to name a few. The books are necessary for developing music literacy, however I remind students that the pages don't make sound!!! Developing a discerning ear is paramount in my approach. As a teacher, I am always wanting to see my students enjoy what is happening in the music. I have wide spectrum of students that I have taught. Some have wanted to play an instrument casually and others wanted to go into the performance route. I am flexible when it comes to my teaching. If a student wants a more serious lesson setting, I can give that to them. If a student is feeling overwhelmed by the lesson load, I can change that as well. Read More

I take a very detailed and analytical approach to music performance, and this is reflected in my teaching. I believe many students look at a piece of music that seems too difficult and become too overwhelmed to realize that's it's not as difficult as it may first appear. By breaking down music into its components, pitch, rhythm, dynamic, articulation, etc., and tackling each item one at a time, students who thought of music as a strange and foreign language begin to see it as something that just works and makes sense. My lessons and objective come from those guidelines. I will not often deviate from it, although I will use my own discretion in determining how to meet the Standard.
