I have had the privileged of working with many successful musicians. After studying the way they taught me and other students, I feel that the best lesson plans are ones that are catered to the individual student. It is important to know what the student wants to accomplish, then build a lesson plan from there. For a beginning student, we start with essential fundamentals, for a more advanced student, I would guide my instruction based on the student goals. Read More

He and I performed weekly during our time at GA State U. jazz dept. from the jazz department, as well as many stadium arena shows w Zac and the guys! From there I met the leaders of the Yacht Rock Revue and went on to perform w Yacht Rock Schooner (still perform with regularly) and later Electric Ave! For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants. My teaching method works for all students, no matter the age or musical level. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my pre-college/ post high school days where I was a volunteer director of a community ensemble in Jamaica. This opportunity opened doors for me to teach music theory and private saxophone and flute lessons in a community based project that was geared towards using music for social development and change in the inner city youth. I eventually moved on to the college setting where I served as a Graduate Assistant who had the responsibility of providing private and supplemental lessons to students who were enrolled in the University, all while operating a private studio of my own. There are many acceptable method books for beginning students, however, I have found that if a student gets relatively comfortable on their instrument before trying to decipher a grand staff, they seem to enjoy the learning experience more. The hardest part of teaching music, in my opinion, is the educational content that isn't in a method book. Finding someone who can play your instrument better than you can often be more inspirational than finding a new piece that is slightly out of your comfort zone or using a method book that, at the end of the day, is supposed to help a student reach the ability level of the person the student aspires to be. I've learn that the most important part of educating my students is to teach to their learning style and ability while giving them some strong encouragement and guidance. I first start with an assements of where the students skills are and their mindset. I try to findout what they want to due and what they like to due. Sometimes students dont truly know. This is important for me because it sets the foundation for how the lessons will be planned out week to week. Read More
