Whether it be to yourself, someone you want to sound like, or your favorite band, the best way to focus your efforts while learning is to know who you want to sound like and what kind of music you want to make. From there, everything else falls into place. There's no use spending long hours practicing techniques and exercises and scale patterns if it's not serving the purpose of helping you achieve your goals and if it's not helping you have fun playing music. My teaching style is pretty heavily implied in the above sentence---when the student enters my studio, we will warm up with scales, chords, and modes. As a Saxophonist and Clarinetist I prescribe to the Joe Allard method of embouchure and technique that has been codified and popularized by saxophone master and pedagog, Dave Liebman, from whom I have taken countless classes. For my classical students, I like to use the Rubank method books. For more advanced students, I am a huge fan of the Rose Studies for Clarinet and the Ferling studies for Saxophone. Both of these books not only provide great etudes for technique but also are great studies in musicality, theory and interpretation. Read More
