I've been teaching music in many different capacities for eight years now. Most recently, I served as the music instructor/curriculum designer for Manhattan Youth at The Computer School. Privately, I've taught students of all ages and experience levels, with focuses on saxophone sound, technique, music theory, aural skills, reading music, and improvisation. My performance experience includes classical clarinet and saxophone repertoire, jazz, klezmer, funk, rock, rb, country, pop, disco, latin, and folk music, allowing me to relate to students from a broad range of interests and experience levels. My first love is jazz, and as such I have a strong love of improvisation and aural skills, which I believe are relevant in all forms of music (even Bach improvised!). Once some fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge is ascertained, I like to build on more advanced musical skills like learning songs by ear, being able to identify certain common chord progressions, helpful tips for memorizing pieces, and learning to personalize music through expressive techniques and improvisational application where appropriate. When I work with a student, I like to think of myself a motivational coach. I like to share the excitement of every new discovery and accomplishment! When working with younger students, I make sure that the lesson is interactive and fun, while giving clear instructions. Having a sense of humor is also a great motivator, as well as keeping in mind the childs age and attention span.
