My teaching style is fairly laid-back, allowing each student to progress at their own pace. This allows me the freedom to tailor the instruction to the specific needs of the student and successfully find what creates their individual passion. I also believe that - especially in creative mediums like music and art - every negative critique I point out needs to be accompanied by at least two positive critiques. For my beginning students, I generally start with the book their school teacher wants them to use, or I have students use the Yamaha book 1. If the student begins in middle school or high school, I like to use the Rubank books. I believe that working on solo repertoire is an important part of learning and performing, so I begin my students on solo repertoire as soon as possible. I choose solo works that are in the ability of the student, yet offer enough of a challenge to help the student learn and grow. Read More

I am a large proponent of fundamentals, and will always encourage students to refine these techniques first. This will include scales, tone production, voicing and overtones, and more! Alongside this will be a combination of student choice pieces and etudes from various books. I like to start with the Melodious and Progressive Studies by David Hite, then progress to Ferling's 48 etudes for more advanced students.
