My teaching experience comes from coaching sectionals, and giving private instruction and classes over all-state etudes and solo repertoire to other students during high school. I have been in teaching roles for other students since I was about 14 years old. I believe that even more than my past teaching and mentoring experience, being a dutiful student throughout my life as a trombonist has shaped my ideals on teaching. I teach my students to practice a growth mindset. As musicians, I find that we can easily become perfectionists. While I think it is important to critique ourselves so we can improve, my policy is that my students critique themselves based on their own progress. For example, instead of comparing themselves to other students at an audition, I encourage them to compare themselves to who they were yesterday. I truly believe that students can more easily reach their full potential when they are focused on growth rather than competition against others. Read More

I always try to ask the student what the scene of a movie would be if they are playing the soundtrack, and get them to convey that when they play. Most schools use the Hal Leonard Essential Elements and I tend to focus on this method as supplemental instruction but other methods are fine as well especially if the student is already working through a particular method book. For young students I encourage a mix of formal music instruction with music the student enjoys. Nothing unlocks a love of learning like discovering how your favorite music works!
