While at Baylor, I was a member of the trombone studio under Brent Phillips. I played in all the instrumental ensembles avaliable to play in as a trombonist. I also studied piano as my secondary instrument in college. I began teaching private lessons part-time during my undergraduate, and I have worked full-time in education, either as a band director or private lesson teacher, for the past 14 years. As a Bachelor's and Master's student, I honed my musicianship and technique to an incredible degree; as a band director, I learned a great deal about how to connect with and break concepts down for young students. Although while at SMU my focus was mainly on orchestral playing and classical techniques, I am equally comfortable playing jazz and commercial styles, and honestly probably play those styles just as much as I do orchestral work now. Planning an individual practice schedule is imperative for their success but at the same time make it enjoyable so the student will want to practice. My teaching experience comes from coaching sectionals, and giving private instruction and classes over all-state etudes and solo repertoire to other students during high school. I have been in teaching roles for other students since I was about 14 years old. I believe that even more than my past teaching and mentoring experience, being a dutiful student throughout my life as a trombonist has shaped my ideals on teaching.
