Also, my students must be able to read music. Reading music is very important to me, having the students be musically literate with a decent tone will take a student far in their musical career. With my wind instrument and percussion students, I like to start with a method book. My favorites include Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. I find that, especially for younger students, this is a great way to introduce beginner theory while learning to apply it to their playing. I spend a great deal of time discussing the importance of breath and practicing breathing gym exercises. My piano method book of choice varies depending on the skill level of the student. Read More
