Instruments: Piano Trombone
Trombone: Practice, practice, practice! The trombone is an extremely unforgiving instrument and this is why the words practice need to be repeated many times every lesson. The student needs to understand that in order to get any enjoyment out of playing the trombone they need to practice regularly. Once the student has a regular practice schedule, then their sound will improve and they will enjoy playing. There can be almost no progress at all until the student finds regular practice time to work on their trombone exercises. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet Trombone
From the first lesson, the most important aspect of teaching is ensuring that the student is attaining the goals he/she is most excited about. If the student is enthusiastic and driven, the rest falls into place naturally. That's the way it's been for the students I've taught, and the way it began for myself. I make sure to celebrate the student's accomplishments and victories, but also address any points or facets of their performance that they could improve upon. Read More

In the first lesson, I assess the student's current ability and also discuss the student's personal goals and interests in music. Based on this information, I create a daily fundamentals routine for the student to use to improve the basic building blocks of playing a musical instrument. I also allow students to bring in music that interests them from solo material and pieces of music from band class. Approximately half of the weekly lesson is spent on fundamental materials that I assign weekly, and the other half is spent on the student's chosen material. Read More

As a professional trombone player for 30 years, I've played in every type of music ensemble imaginable. From the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, to subbing in the Count Basie Big Band, to playing with the O'Jays, Doc Severinson, in the pits of touring Broadway show productions (South Pacific, Camelot, Company), radio and TV work in Canada, rock bands, playing in International Jazz Festivals in Canada and the US (with Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, Sweden's Erik Lundmark), and numerous Latin bands and big bands in New York city (Vince Giordano, Lew Anderson, Stan Rubin).... For Beginning Students, I suggest using either Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Rubank's series of books starting with the Elementary Method book in addition to a warm-up that is essential to what they need to work on. Once my students have a grasp of the fundamentals, I suggest a step up in method books to both Rubank Intermediate series and Bordogni Etudes. In addition, I will assign solo repertoire that we will work on for either recitals or competitions. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Trombone Bass Guitar
Music has been a large part of my since I was a child, to include teaching. I started on trombone, moved to guitar, and found my real passion in electric bass. While I have led many careers in my life (construction, marketing, program management) music has always been a consistent side project. I have been fortunate enough to play and record with some well-known artists, and tour the US and UK. Read More
