I do teach through lesson books but I've always found that they're better used as a guide rather than the focus of every lesson. I like to give the students the freedom to learn what they want to learn. Once they have a good grasp of the instrument, I will help them select fun and challenging pieces to learn to keep them engaged and progressing.
