Finding the starting place for any student is important, regardless of age. As a child of an adult learner who took lessons in guitar and voice, I understand the distinction between adult and younger learners. The pacing, goal setting and choice of materials and resources is important to keep interest and spark inspiration to practice and maintain growth. I strive to make sure each person gets an experience crafted and prepared for them through gauging interests, setting realistic goals and being aware of what kind fo time commitment they have to meet their goals. My experience with learning was fun. Since I was learning multiple instruments it was fun to tie everything together. I could say the best part while learning was understanding theory...that part of my learning opened up many doors for me musically. I started to understand why certain notes could and couldn't be played, why and how to use different scales. Those things are the same things I try to reveal to the students when the time is right. I am passionate about teaching. Music education is but a second thought of most of our children's primary educational settings, so I wanted to create a learning environment that focuses on performance and execution. I am a composer and arranger, so I also like to infuse some basic music theory and compositional/improvisational techniques into my lessons. In short, I am trying to foster new artists! Read More

The most important philosophical concept about private lessons is this: proceed in a way that will maximize your potential to achieve an excellent goal that you can call your own. Although I am not limited to one method book or another, I typically use Arban's for trumpet lessons - with other books and repertoire along with it. My background is Suzuki violin, followed by music literacy and transposition. So, whatever method book we select, we must consider basic furthering of direct musical perceptions, in addition to achievement of stated goals. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my experience performing as a production singer and vocal captain for Carnival Cruise Lines. Performing on the Carnival Spirit gave me the opportunity to make a living as a performer while traveling the world. I could not have had that experience without years of music education in my life!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
When I was in the 5th grade, I decided that I wanted to play the trumpet because my grandfather played the trumpet. As a kid I had always looked up to him growing up and playing the trumpet made sense to me. Singing was always a passion of mine even when I wasn't "studying" singing in the traditional sense. My love for signing, and my interests in other famously talented singers was what motivated me to pursue a degree in voice and vocal music education. When you know what you want to do in life, you don't stop until you make it happen!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe your child is ready to start lessons if they are starting to show an interest in singing or playing and instrument, they have experience learning from an adult other than their parents, and can focus for a 20-30 minute lesson.
When will I start to see results?
Each student's growth is different, but my students will leave each lesson with new knowledge of concepts. Results are also influenced by the amount of time spent practicing outside of the lessons!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Of course! I had several teachers that inspired me to go into music. Each one of these instructors believed in me, and pushed me to be a better musician.
It was their passion for teaching and belief in my abilities that helped shape me into the musician and educator that I am today.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
If you want to take you musicianship seriously, you really should try to practice everyday. One may think that the most productive practicing method would be to repeat an entire song over and over again, for as many hours in a row as possible, each day. However, it has been proven to be more effective to practice small segments of a piece of music, specifically the sections you are having the most trouble with, for shorter periods of time. By isolating the troubled sections, you're able to learn an entire piece of music in a shorter period of time.
