My teaching style is one that is not used much at beginning levels but for me, that's why it works. Teaching a young student how to play the instrument by sound and not by reading notes allows them to use their imagination while playing. When students figure out for themselves, that is when the best kind of learning happens. Of course, this method relies on the student investing in themselves and actually practicing for at least an 30-60 minutes a day for beginners. Read More

I use a variety of methods for my teaching style. I usually have a few method books that I bring to a first lesson, and after meeting the student I will decide on the best one. Once the student has progressed and shows some motivation to be slightly challenged, I'll introduce "popular" music so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment! Music is associated with movies, radio, etc., so to be able to play something recognizable is exciting for the student and the teacher. Read More

I have been teaching students for about 15 years now both in private and class room settings. I teach a range from 3 all the way up to 65. I am very patient and detail oriented. All my students learn a solid foundation while facilitating room for individuality and creativity. My style of teaching is all about keeping students engaged and motivated to get better at their craft everyday. I also encourage students to apply my methods to teach themselves and others when I'm not around. Read More

I always start with what type of music the learner is interested in. This helps engage the learner so that the student comes from a comfortable place, and then we use the lessons from that music to apply and expand to other genres. Read More

My new students typically spend their first lesson and sometime their second getting used to playing the trumpet for the first time; the goal is to learn proper breathing, posture and tone. I have found the best method book for students is the "Learn to Play the Trumpet/Cornet" method book and always ask that students purchase the Arban's Method book, a must have for any trumpet player. Once the student is proficient in beginning methods, I like to move on to technical studies and the Sigmund Hering Etudes, as well as studies in the Arban's Method; if the student has progressed well enough Concertos and solo performance music will be added. For beginner students in fourth grade or above, I like to work with the method book that their school district uses. Most districts use Essential Elements from Hal Leonard or Standards of Excellence. If the student is also a beginner at reading music, we will focus on music fundamentals and basic theory to build their notation reading skills. I like to integrate songs the students choose, whether it be from a movie or a pop song, to not only reinforce their techniques, but to get the student excited about practicing and performing music. For beginners I will typically start out of a book called Essential Elements. Once the students have a grasp of that book it is essential we get in to Arbans Conservatory Method for Trumpet. From there we can go in any direction the student wants. Be it Jazz or Classical. Read More
