For beginner students in fourth grade or above, I like to work with the method book that their school district uses. Most districts use Essential Elements from Hal Leonard or Standards of Excellence. If the student is also a beginner at reading music, we will focus on music fundamentals and basic theory to build their notation reading skills. I like to integrate songs the students choose, whether it be from a movie or a pop song, to not only reinforce their techniques, but to get the student excited about practicing and performing music. I have taken private lessons since I was in fifth grade, but really only found my love for trumpet when I got to the end of my high school career. It was after spending time in marching band and concert bands that I decided I wanted to teach music for a living. I pursued that love in college and started teaching privately once I was in school. I am always very patient with all my students. I never try to put too much work on the student and always believe you should have more then one chance to get it right. Music is not a test and their is no failing, there is only the end result, which ends when the student makes progress, no matter how long it takes. I like to concentrate on my students abilities and ask that they bring 100% to their lessons as most of the lesson time is spent on the instrument; some lessons may be more informative for students interested inan in depthunderstanding of music theory. Some of my students have wanted to become college music majors and others simply wanted to learn the instruments recreationally. In my experience I have found that it is most effective to teach students in a one-on-one setting. When others are involved in the lesson it can cause a student to become self conscious and therefore effects their progress. It is important for the student to begin with a defined goal so that progress can be measured. When the student sees their progress they maintain enthusiasm in pursuit of the goal. Read More
