For beginning students playing piano I typically start with Alfred's' Basic Piano Library, deciding on level when I learn about a students background in playing. On any brass wind instrument I will start with Measures of Success by FJH Music. It's important to me that students practice and understand the important of fundamentals in their music playing. A solid foundation provides students with the necessary tools to advance their musical career far past casually impressing friends with simple and redundant pieces. Read More

I received my first major experience teaching at the collegiate level while I was a teaching assistant at Penn State University. From 2016-2018 I taught 15 college students ranging from undeclared freshmen to a 3rd year Physics PhD student. Moving to Southern California, I began teaching at LAMUSART, an arts school serving the community of East Los Angeles, providing quality and affordable lessons and opportunities to students in the area. I encourage students to seek out and create their own performance opportunities. Read More

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Guitar demands good technique, especially in the left hand (for right handed players). Getting used to playing clean chords and changing chords cleanly, as well as playing clean scales and melodic lines, certainly takes a good deal of patience at first. The good news is it rewards faithful practice in spades and is eventually like riding a bike.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
The student that I am most proud of to this day was a young lad named who started drums with me at the age of 4. After 6 months, he performed in a recital playing a whole popular song start to finish using grooves we worked on together, as well as fills of his own inspiration. He had such a serious, and determined look, taking full ownership in his performance, and I could not have been more proud.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
For my college senior recital I got to compose an hour-long classical concert which was performed by over 100 of my friends, professors, and classmates from the previous 4 years. One piece was performed by an extremely gifted professional violinist who occasionally played with our orchestra, and it left the packed house and me completely speechless.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I love guitar because you can sing and play songs with it, take it anywhere, and experience a rich repertoire in almost any genre. It’s lyrical, rhythmic, plays well with others, and serves as an excellent writing and composing instrument.
When will I start to see results?
I believe you improve every time you practice well, so results are just 30 minutes away. When you practice well multiple times a week, you’re putting yourself into the dangerously fulfilling position to improve all the time. But take a week, a month, a year off, and you’ll need to work your skills back up.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My first music teacher was Brady, a talented drummer, bassist, and guitarist in the marching band, jazz, and funk genres. He was patient, exposed me to new styles, and gave me the fundamentals I needed and still use to improve myself.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I have seen 4 year olds have a blast and learn new skills as well as 10 year olds who seem to dread everything about lessons and practicing. At any age, if someone has a joy of learning and motivation to improve at their instrument, they have what it takes to have a successful lesson experience.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Go slow, as slow as you must to play the section confidently. After three flawless takes in a row, then and only then should you increase your speed, and repeat. Now you can be confident you are actually training your mind and your muscles to get better and not teaching them to play poorly.
