Instruments: Violin Cello

I look at a students ability to read music first to determine what kind of music they should be working on. I teach students on an individual basis in order to quickly help them improve. I expected online students to bring up information about their playing experiences so that can best accommodate them as their online private teacher. During quarantine, I was able to teach 100 students how to play an orchestra instrument and it has a lot to do with showing and explaining live during those lessons. Read More

Susan F

Instruments: Piano Guitar Violin Saxophone Clarinet

My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. When the student can successfully play a passage correctly then the work turns into fun music making. Read More

Instruments: Piano Violin

I love music and love creating music experiences with others. I was in the I violin section in the Fairbanks Symphony orchestra the last few years. I received my Suzuki Teacher Certification for Violin books 1-6 in 2018. I received my Bachelors of Arts in Violin Performance in May of 2016. I've had much experience playing in an orchestra and being a part of string ensembles. I was concertmaster of the Moore County Philharmonic for 2 years. Read More

Autumn Emily D

Instruments: Violin Viola

For young beginners, I use a lot of the Suzuki Method of teaching. Music games, pitch recognition and rhythms are all introduced as games during the lessons. My adults study from a combination of pieces, exercises, scales and duets. I think understanding the pieces you are playing is important so students learn how to recognize key signatures and time signatures. I have many students participate in school orchestra and youth orchestra programs so students are coached on how to prepare, how to audition and learn how to cope with nerves. Read More

Rick S

Instruments: Drums Orchestral Percussion

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
It was gradual and steady. Once I learned how to teach Drums, I began playing in a cover band. From there, it became a passion for creating Original music. Since then, I have not stopped and consider myself a Professional Musician.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I find progressive Metal Drumming is my favorite. Especially, if I'm playing along with the music that I have composed. Also, solo Drumming is a passion...Making "Drum Songs" from my Percussion.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I am also a Vocalist. Simply, it came about as no member in one of my bands could sing in the style that was needed. From there, I gradually went form singing back up to lead. It's fun to play Drums and sing at the same time.

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Have a plan...use your time effectively...Focus on what you don't know (yet)...and above all:Be Patient! If a Student has 4 things to work on, and only 1 hour, then spend 15 minutes on each. This will require discipline! If you noodle for 30 minutes, then...You only have time to work on 2 items. Above all, have fun learning new things.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My Great Grandfather was a famous German Composer. He had published original music that was performed in Europe in the early 1900's. I keep his picture next to the rig I use when I write my original music. He's been an inspiration all my musical life.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
In 2014/2015, when the country of Ukraine was experiencing internal conflict (called the Maidan), I wrote a song for the Ukrainian people. It was a hit and played on their #1 Internet station:Radio Roks.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
In Real Estate, an Agent will tell you with a smile:The 3 most important things in Real Estate is "Location - Location - Location". So, I believe the most important thing to master playing Drums: "Keeping Good Time - Keeping Good Time - Keeping Good Time".

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Stick Control...Ted Reed's Syncopation...John Xepoleas' Style Studies...My Footiments Book...Joe Franco Double Bass,etc/ I have found over the years, these books have helped the most. Honestly, I have a book list I teach from. I use 80+ Drum Books.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Always...warm up! 20 minutes on the practice pad...10 minutes on Double Pedal/Double Bass to keep the blood flowing. Then, I spend time - usually 30 minutes - on things I'm still learning have not yet mastered. After, I go through my bands' set...playing about 13 songs..I'm playing Drums and singing lead vocal.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Back in the day, I was in a fun "air Band" with my little Brother. One day, we decided it was time to form a real band. In this "air Band",I was the Drummer. So, we all agreed to purchase instruments, ask for lessons, and get together to make a band. It was close to my Birthday, so I asked my Mom for Drum lessons. She agreed and that 's how I started.

When will I start to see results?
In my experience, if the Student follows their assignments, you will see results in 3 months. I have had newcomer Drum Students successfully learn a Drum Beat on the first lesson!

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Simple:He invited me to a rehearsal with his band. It was a group that played all styles...Rock - Jazz - Latin. I watched him play in his band, play music, using all the elements he was teaching me. This inspired me to continue and strive to learn more. And, to learn from other Drum Teachers!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
For Drummers? I call it:"The Drum Bug". Your child is always looking at Drums...You notice they have good time when listening to music..They make their own Drums at home by playing on your pots and pans. I find, when the Drum Bug is strong, the Student is ready, eager, and willing to get serious about taking Drum Lessons. Oh, and possibly...they've asked you a million times for lessons and a Drumset!

Piano Styles

...Music as we know it simply wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for the piano. There’s no other organic instrument on the planet that matches the piano’s impressive range, dynamicity and power. The piano is a tool that countless musicians have used to compose and perform music with since its invention over three centuries ago, and many groundbreaking and influential styles of playing have developed alongside the instrument. We’re going to highlight some of the more prominent piano styles in this article, but first, let’s talk about what this amazing instrument is and where it came from.   Piano origins and construction  ... When I Was Your Man Chords for Beginner Guitar (Bruno Mars)

...need to look at the right hand while playing. Once you get used to it, you can “feel” where you are.   I suggest using the block chords for the intro and the verse. Then, add arpeggios to the verse as well. Use the bass-chord technique for the refrain and finger-strumming technique for the chorus. I explain this in more detail in the video.   Chord Chart   I’ve included a When I Was Your Man chords chart, which is a simple road map that shows you: The overall arrangement of the song. A section by section breakdown of the song. Each chord and ... Read More

Piano Technique: The Importance of Good Playing Habits

...that are sometimes difficult to learn. Notes on the piano—even ones in loud, powerful passages of music—should be played using the force of the hand and not by straining individual fingers. Straining or struggling to hit certain notes is bad piano technique because the strength, power, and movement between the hands and fingers should be distributed as equally as possible. Think of it this way: If you were listening to a person playing piano in the next room, you’d ideally hear passages of notes being played in a controlled, even fashion. Bad piano fingering technique can happen when a student ... Read More

...helpful when you’re not familiar with the song or there’s a section of the song that you don’t remember (Bridges and Interludes are notorious surprises that can derail a song’s performance). And, this tune has a Bridge, so don’t fall into a false sense of security.         Wrap-up   As I said in the article, Hey There Delilah is great tune for aspiring finger-style players and singer/guitarists. It’s also a crowd favorite that will make a great addition to growing arsenal of songs.   I hope that you’ve enjoyed learning the Hey There Delilah chords and I thank you for hanging with me.     ...
