I do believe that understanding of music theory is necessary to advance beyond the intermediate level, and this system has assisted in training many students over the years. He played in his schools string orchestra, the Conejo Youth Symphony, and was awarded the opportunity to perform at the Music Teacher's Association convention in Sacramento.
