When first taking private viola lessons I studied Wohfahrt Etudes. Playing 1-2 level appropriate pieces is a great amount. Repertoire from the Suzuki books are fundamental stepping stones into becoming a better musician. I always enjoyed when I got to play a piece that I chose out myself, so I want to allow my students to find a piece of music on their own that they would love to play. Read More

For beginning students, I like the Suzuki method for violin. I've been trained in that method. I'm also very flexible and like to incorporate other styles into our lessons. I believe that students develop skills quickly when they have a good understanding of hand position, note reading and ear training. While still in high school, I discovered that I love watching others realize their own musical potential. I began with tutoring my peers and enjoyed it enough to take on students of my own. My teaching had to take a pause during my college years, but I have been looking forward to the freedom to teach again! I try to help my students feel comfortable with themselves and their abilities because it can be frustrating to not understand a concept immediately or progress as quickly as others, and I want them to enjoy the music while they're playing rather than comparing themselves to others. I studied piano performance with Robert Smith and violin performance with Percy Kalt at BYU; I have also studied with Jeffrey Shumway, former Head of Keyboard Studies, BYU and Carroll Meyer, Boise State University.
