As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. With each new student, I assess their abilities and goals. From this information, I will make a decision reagrding which method I will use to teach the students their instrument. As lessons progress, the curriculum becomes more challenging. Depending on each students abilities and goals, I will most likely one of the following methods: Faber, Alfred, John Thompson, or Suzuki. We gradually increase the tempo over the next several weeks. Pieces like that will be rehearsed at the end of each lesson after working through a few passages in Alfreds book. At the beginning, I ask my adults what music theyre interested in learning.
