My voice students ranged from young beginning singers just learning the basics of singing to seniors in undergrad preparing large roles. When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. As for my experience, I have been playing guitar for 15 years, teaching for 5 years, and active in bands for 7 years. I was privileged to receive private guitar lessons myself for a decade. Also, I have a solid amount of experience with audio recording, mixing, and microphone techniques for amplifying instruments. At the beginng of the first lesson I like to ask my student about their musical experience, interest and if they have any over arching goals, and after that I warm them up and teach them part of a simple song either from a popular musical or (for my younger students) Disney song in order to hear the maturity, tonality, and range they are starting with.
