For Voice I cater my teaching to the student's goals and aspirations. The first 10-15 minutes of a lessons are spent doing vocal warmups and sightsinging exercises. The remaining time is spent working on repertoire that the student and myself choose together. For Piano I work out of the Faber Piano Adventure Books. After college, I lived in New York City for 5 years and then Los Angeles for 5 years, while teaching voice and working as a professional singer. I have recently moved back home to South Jersey and can't wait to continue my passion for teaching voice. In our first lesson, I will ask that they bring something to record their lesson with. I will warm the student up vocally, in order to hear their range, capability and level of skills. I will then ask them to sing a little something for me, something they love that they're passionate about. From there I will be able to understand what they need as far as technique training. I expect the student to practice and learn for him or her self. I am there to facilitate. I am there to help. I am there to be the teacher and to encourage. I give each student the freedom to learn and prove to themselves just how wonderful they can be. I sit down with each student and parent, if the parent is coming with them, in the beginning and discuss with them the importance of practice and what it does to help with the learning process. For all of my students, I typically start with teaching (for more advanced students at least reviewing) the fundamentals of breathing for singing. From there I move on to phonation: how to produce a healthy sound, in coordination with and supported by the breath. After the student has begun to grasp these fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire based on the where the student is developmentally and their goals. Read More
