My experience in teaching started on ships when people would approach me from different departments and ask to learn to sing. Most of the people were dancers who wanted to expand their skill sets to get higher paid positions. It soon expanded to the other Vocalists who wanted to expand their range and styles. Particularly in Opera and with their belt range. I also did a lot of work with the guest entertainers who were more experienced as entertainers but had gone a long time performing on damaged chords and needed some touch up on making certain notes easier to hit 8 shows a week. I introduce double stop positioning, bar positions, forms for 12 bar and 1-4-5- chord patterns in different styles of music (this can range from Beethoven to Jimi Hendrix). I then move to introducing songs than have the same core chords, but in different sequences, so students can see broader applications. I also have an favorite tool of mine that especially helps with theory -- a wheel that has the circle of 5ths carved into it, with patterns and relations between the keys carved into an inner wheel on it as well. At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson.
