My students love that I laugh and chat with them during our lessons. I primarily teach Musical theater and characterization, but I can also teach classical music and diction (languages). I have a routine that I use for the lesson time--breath exercises followed by the vocal warm up and then working on a piece. During that process I always encourage an open dialogue between myself and every student. I want to student to feel as comfortable as possible and always have the option to ask questions and take part in their development as a singer. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Generally, I sit down with the student and we set a goal. From there I can break down this goal into little Milestones and from there, the material for each lesson springs forth. Some of it may be from books, some may be a customized adaptation of a song they want to learn made for their specific level. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments help a fuel a studner desire to progress and makes students eager to learn.
