Even though all students require different needs, I will usually start my lessons by warming up the voice with different exercises. After that, I will work on repertoire with the student. My favorite book for beginning singers is the 24 Italian Songs Arias. A lot of good habits and technique can be learned through repertoire. I always begin with an assessment lesson during which the student and I can become acquainted and I can learn the students ambitions, levels of development, and personal style. For voice students Ibegin with basic vocal technique, including the study of breathing, posture, voice placement, diction, and English and Italian pronunciation for singing. For students who are young children, I like to start working on fundamental musical and singing concepts, including posture, breath management, pitch matching, music literacy, and expression. I work with each student to find songs which are appropriate for their voice, and songs they are excited about working on. I like a light, fun atmosphere during lessons, one that reflects the learning style and personality of each student. There are some not-so-fun things about learning music (practice schedules and repetition) but there are plenty of resources out there to help students stay interested and motivated.
