Instruments: Piano Voice
I believe in being supportive, encouraging, and kind, yet firm. I encourage those students who are interested in performing by helping them to find opportunities. Every student is different and has different goals. We work to develop their potential. Some of my students are beginners and some have more experience. I like to make the lessons as fun as they can be and work on pieces and songs that the students enjoy! Read More
Instruments: Voice
Teaching voice is something that I believe requires highly personalized lesson plans, and so there are books for which to acquire basic theory, note-reading, and sight-singing, but usually, lessons must be repertoire based, and conceptual. Students usually have an idea of certain songs they would like to learn, and I believe it is very important to enable them to sing what they like to sing. However, I will also suggest repertoire that they are unfamiliar with, or initially uncomfortable with to broaden their musical knowledge and appreciation, and also to address certain skill sets. Instruments: Piano Voice
My voice and piano studio teaching had it genesis in 1985 with a private home studio in Chicago. Since then, I have taught in church programs (choral students working on solo voice) as well as in the university setting (student teaching and TA voice class support). I have also led seminars in Group Voice and Cantor Training for Church and Liturgy and Worship. Wherever you are at, we accept, as a dual-team, and then, collectively design a way to help you achieve what it is you desire. Read More
Instruments: Voice
Speaking from my personal experience with lessons, I have always had positive, encouraging, yet critical teachers. In other words, I love to provide a fun, modern, easy energy to my studio, but hold my students accountable to practice their repertoire on their own time, come prepared and ready to sing and make progress at each lesson, while still connecting with them and treating them like a person and building that personal connection as well, that I believe is so vital in maintaining a relationship that goes beyond the doors of a studio or practice room. Instruments: Guitar Voice Trumpet
I am not a teacher of "cookie cutter" lessons. I like to consult with parents and students before preparing an individually-tailored lesson plan for each of my students. It's my goal to engage students through music they already love, and (at the same time) introduce them to new music ideas and musical concepts/challenges. Building early repoire between teacher and student is crucial to building a working knowledge for performing music later on. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice Violin Viola
I have been called the female Jack Black by many of my former and current students. So I do believe you could say that I am fun, I make things comfortable and provide a great environment to learn, but then I can also truly be serious and strict when it comes to practicing and performing. Expectations: Practice DAILY. Be ready for each lesson. Be willing to communicate with me about things you do not understand. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Violin Viola
For piano I use the Alfred series, and for violin and viola I use a combination of Essential Elements and Suzuki books. As students advance I introduce additional solo repertoire. My voice students learn from a variety of sources. I usually start with a song they know well and work from there. Students also learn a variety of warm-ups and sight-singing techniques. Read More
