After various performing opportunities in high school, I started my journey to become a music educator at the University of Miami in 2007. My participation in choral and theatre ensembles has taken me around the world practicing my passion and mastering my craft. I currently produce classical music concerts in addition to teaching private lessons. Throughout my singing career, I have had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall and Geffen Hall in New York, the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts in Philadelphia, the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, and various locations throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Ecuador, and Spain. I have a deep passion for the convergence of theory and performance, because I believe that understanding the theoretical reasons behind musical decisions opens up vast realms of experimentation and creativity. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the marriage of music theory and performance, so that my students can learn how to build on the foundation that has been laid by the musicians who have come before us. I believe that it is the educator's duty to tailor his or her teaching to the unique learning style and needs of each student. Read More

After my own experience with it as well as teaching it, Suzuki has great techniques and music for getting students experience in sight-reading, ear training, and memorization. With the youngest students I start with the fundamentals such as naming the different parts of the instrument and some basic rules with notes. Acronyms and games are always the best way to memorize the different rules. I write out detailed lessons plans for each individual student, constructed specifically for their learning process. I have been teaching music for 15 years, during this time I have been able to understand the diversity of paste in which we all learn. My purpose is to inspired and challenge my students so that they can find their own voice and style, during my classes we find out what the best way to achieve our goals is by working hard, having fun and creating a musical relationship. My lessons are an interaction between myself and the student where I point out their strengths and weaknesses, an environment of love and patience where music serves us as the medium for growth. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I once took a masterclass with a clarinetist who asked the music students what the number one reason people didn’t practice. Some students said Laziness, others said Lack of Motivation. I raised my hand and said, “Fear.” Fear is the number one reason why any person who needs to practice something might procrastinate, waste time, or just give up completely. Fear of failure, or even fear of success, can paralyze a musician of any age.
I always encourage my students to acknowledge what fear is keeping them from practicing, meditate on the answer, and then move past it. We will work together to find a way toward consistency. Understand that not every method works for everyone. It takes time to figure out what works for you. I have many ideas that I use to help students overcome practice and performance anxiety, including making practice charts, taking breaks, positive self talk, and rewards!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe a child is ready to start lessons if their parent is willing to learn with them and continue teaching even when the instructor isn’t there. A three year old can learn music theory, but not if their grownup isn’t willing to practice with them every day for even just five minutes. An older child still needs help staying on track, and that’s when the adult(s) in their life come in. Even if your child is a musical genius, prodigies still need to practice! We will talk about what to practice and for how long based on age and experience in every lesson, and I will adjust this as we go along.
When will I start to see results?
When it comes to music, there is always more to learn! But, in my experience, being result oriented tends to rush students of any age into sloppy techniques, lack of music theory awareness, and ultimately frustration with practice. Being willing to practice the same scales every day slowly and correctly while increasing tempo gradually is more important than being able to play Für Elise on day one.
However, I understand a student’s potential passion for performance opportunities. With voice and piano, I teach skills that allow students to learn chord structures and keys in a way that enables them to learn new songs quickly and easily (with practice) while not throwing out the importance of music theory knowledge.
