Breathing gives life to singing, and learning the correct way to breathe takes much time and practice. I give them warm ups and drills to practice at home to improve their breathing and other techniques. I will either let the student choose what songs they would like to work on or give them suggestions, depending on their preferences and needs. As we go, I encourage and help the student apply what we learn in warm ups and technique exercises to how they sing the song we're currently working on. Read More

My goal for the initial meeting with a student is to know what their joy and passion is with music. What is their creative spark? Why do they want to learn to play piano? I then evaluate their listening skills, rhythm skills, hand and eye coordination, motor abilities, and improvisational skills. I ask them to share what style of music they enjoy listening to and if they are open to creating their own song. Read More

I incorporate a variety of method books and approaches to learning music, believing that there is no one method for every student. For piano, my favorite methods are Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures, but I enjoy utilizing supplemental material from a variety of genres. Read More

I like to equate learning any musical instrument to being a batter in baseball. The best batters still strike out, but when they hit that sweet spot, boom! Learning music isn't just about learning to play an instrument, but to develop yourself and your brain. I used to tell the kids in my music theater program, that they are the cream of the crop in school for taking a risk and showing themselves to the world. Read More

I write all my own lesson materials focusing on what the student needs to know to play, understand, and enjoy music to achieve their goals. I have used several method books in the past but find them all limited or focused on styles or technique that is not what the student wants or needs to learn. I can teach from any established method if that is preferred, but instead enjoy challenging the student to understand what music is and how music is played on their chosen instrument, not just to read. My approach to teaching is fun and nurturing, making sure students have a clear understanding of the fundamental principles of music, while encouraging individual student's own creativity and aural skills.I always inspire students to enjoy music and their musical instrument whilst developing their discipline to build self-esteem and help them grow socially and academically. During my lessons students work on their sight reading, technique, ear training and,of course I come up with fun musical games for younger beginners. Read More

I like to have a balance in my lessons between fun and challenge. I do this by setting realistic goals each week for my students, dependent on their level of perfomance and the pace that they are progressing. Not everyone will progress at the same pace, and I feel that it is more important for a student to master a particular lesson than to move quickly through the lesson book. Read More
