Each student comes in with their own unique experience, ability level, and personality. So, while the overall structure of my lessons is going to be the same for everyone, it is vital that I set realistic goals for each student based on their own experience and individuality. Each student should be able to look back over the course of a year and pinpoint areas in which they have improved...having this conversation is one of the huge payoffs of teaching! Read More

In my studio, the most important thing when structuring lessons is to make them individualized. No two lessons look the same in my studio. If a student wants to work on composing, that will be the focus. If the student wants to work on sight-reading, we'll focus on that. Of course, it's important to be a well-rounded musician, but these lessons are for the students' benefit, not mine, so I'll make sure they leave their lessons with what they want to gain. Read More

My teaching experience started in High School when I would exchange piano lessons for guitar with a musician friend of mine. My formal teaching experience began in Atlanta 5 years ago when I co-taught group keyboard lessons for beginner elementary school students and taught adult beginner voice students through my in-home studio. I took this experience back to my home town of Iowa City where I traveled to teach beginner adult piano and beginner adult voice and taught beginner-early intermediate piano and voice through a local music lessons studio. nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, so i encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. setting and hitting realistic goals drives motivation and acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more, and keeps the learning process new and exciting etc. by trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs, while the student remains comfortable and confident in his/her abilities etc. Read More

I believe in a student learning to hear music and think for themselves. Through ear training, creativity, and learning "how" music works, the goal is to get each student to not need a teacher to learn their instrument, but want a teacher so they may become their best version of it. I focus on this as a primary value in my studio. In lessons, we'll use formulas and concepts to understand "why" things sound good, and "how" we actually get better. Read More

I have been teaching privately for the past 4 years, and established my personal virtual studio 3 years ago. I began to take on students after my master's degree, and in that time I have learned a great deal about using a completely individual approach per each student's needs. I am experienced in a wide variety of teaching scenarios: training the earliest beginner (of all ages!), preparing students for college auditions, and being a coach for professionals. Read More

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I come from a long line of singers and instrumentalists. Many of my family members are recording artists as well. My grandparents were well known Gospel artists back in the day and I have many relatives that were well known instrumentalists. I am following the footsteps that have walked before me.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I think I would still be teaching, but teaching general education instead of music.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite style/genres to sing are Neo Soul and R&B, however, I love to surprise people by singing Opera, Classical and Tejano because they do not expect me to know how to sing those styles.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I knew at age 12 that I wanted to be a professional musician. It was a defining moment for me after overcoming my fear of singing solo. I realized how much I enjoyed singing solo in front of a crowd. I immediately became hooked and since then, I have always looked forward to (and hustled for) the next opportunity.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a bachelor's degree in Vocal Music.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to perform a piece by Selena Quintanilla. Her songs are in Spanish and I like to challenge myself to learn the lyrics and style. In college, students were never required to learn songs in Spanish and I would love to change the trajectory of that.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of being a recording artist and songwriter. People around the world are hearing songs that I either was on vocally or have helped to write.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Singing has been a part of me since I was two years old. It is an indescribable feeling to get up in front of a crowd and share your heart through song.
When will I start to see results?
Everybody is different and starts at different starting points. If a student is consistent in attending lessons and practicing at home, results will come rather quickly. If results don't come immediately, I like to say to stick with it a little longer. Some things take a little more time.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe that a parent/guardian should have a conversation with their child about lessons before signing up. It'll be more enjoyable for a child that wants to be there than a child who is being forced to take lessons.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practicing should be fun! All too often, practicing feels like a chore when it shouldn't. Students should take notes during lessons and choose 3 things to work on during their at home practices. Especially when it comes to technique. Don't overwhelm yourself with the amount of hours practicing. A few minutes a day is just as effective (if not more) than 5 hours of practice a day.
