The beauty of studying music is that there is always something else to learn, but the most moving and fun part of singing is communicating ideas and poetry. I aim to develop personal ownership of songs/repertoire in all students (no matter their age) alongside the instruction and study of healthy vocal technique. I have categories of students, from children who are trying to function in a band setting, to children who are trying to develop a musical or compositional talent. I take particular joy in teaching adults who believe it is too late to achieve levels of technical proficiency that would make them proud. My journey from classical music to jazz through pop, swing, rock, soul and folk has taught me how to blend in with any style, and my classical education has given me the necessary toolbox to communicate about advanced theoretical concepts with students who are interested. The lesson starts with Awareness Through Movement (ATM) applying the Feldenkrais Method to get the student in a state where the mind-body learns new possibilitites of movement, making the body feel more comfortable and expanded. It is a first "tuning" before working directly with the sounding voice. Breathing excercises and vocal technique are to continue.
