I am a motivated and fun-loving music teacher of all age ranges. I have been teaching private voice and piano lessons since I was a senior in high school, and I love working with all of my students and watching them grow throughout the course of our lessons. I graduated magna cum laude from The Hartt School in 2001, receiving my BFA in Musical Theatre Performance. A year after I graduated from college, I knew that I wanted to teach in schools along with teaching privately, so I got my PreK thru 12th Grade Music Teaching Certification for the State of CT through The ARC Program, and have been teaching in both the private and public school settings ever since. For my older students I always try and find out what they would like to focus on specifically. I usually begin with what they feel their musical strengths and weaknesses are. From there we build up their strengths and create newer strengths. I create my own personal lesson plans to cater to each individual student. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student progress, or better yet, develop a love for music. When my students succeed, I feel as though I have. I feel as though every student should progress at their own pace and music especially should not be something that stresses the student out (especially when it is art). I like to begin with the basics of singing technique, sight reading, and music theory. In order to be a successful singer, one must be proficient in all of these! I like to assign music by the second or third lesson, depending on the student's readiness and ability. I typically assign one classical and/or one musical theater song, depending on the student's interest. I start with only these two genres because I feel that singing something that the student can hear on the radio can be difficult to sing while implementing the new technique they are learning in lessons with me. Next, doing exercises together to learn diaphragm breathing and see the joy as they realize they can make a lovely vocal sound.
