The teaching methods I use will depend on the student. Each is different. I want them to thrive. I want to teach music because music is a language anyone can learn. It is a language that can overcome politics, tragedies, race, creed, theology, and borders. Music can be a great equalizer and an even greater friend. It touches the soul and mind in ways that we as human beings are still trying to comprehend. Read More

I ask my students what their goal is with singing and if they want to do it professionally. Then I do vocal exercises to find out which voice my student has whether its soprano, mezzo-soprano or altos. Once I know what type of voice my student has, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire from opera, musical theatre or pop. I always ask my students how they feel with a specific vocal exercise and if they notice a change in their voice. Read More

Establishing a trusting and balanced bond between teacher and student is imperative to musical growth. Everyone has their own tastes, goals and preferred learning and communication styles. I take pride in embracing more of a mentoring approach, tailoring my teaching style and materials to each individual student in hopes of guiding them on their musical journey rather than choosing it for them. I believe in creating a strong basis of knowledge in theory, technique, and composition (at the levels appropriate for the student's current progress). Read More

A voice lesson to me to should be easygoing and open, while having a task to accomplish. I encourage my students to enter my studio with an open mind and feel free to explore artistically. We set goals together and progress vocally with each song. I have an extensive library of music as well which my students are free to use to find new material. It's very rewarding to guide a student along their journey to discovering their voice! Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
My teaching style focuses on what most interests the student and draws them to the particular instrument. We explore different song styles and different exercises that speak to each individual student. I also believe in regularly providing constructive criticism and encouragement for each student's accomplishments. The more you inspire your student, the more driven they become. I encourage students to pick their favorites styles and songs to work on and we then take it from there and provide inspiration and a bit of fun! Read More

Beginners - intermediate have a healthy helping of both theory ( notes, scales, chords), technique ( physical drills), and creativity! Meaning, songwriting, listening, learning favorite songs.. improvisation! This of course varies from student to student, but whatever they are physically and mentally able to handle at the time, is what we will embark on -- nothing challenging enough to keep anyone away from their chosen instrument -- it's supposed to be fun - 'PLAY"ing music! Instruments: Piano Voice Music
For my piano students, I like to use a mixture of books from the Alfred, Bastien, and John W. Schaum collections. I eventually assign more advanced solo repertoire as the student progresses. For my vocal students, I pick music based on their interests and vocal qualities. I have taught my students musical theater, opera, art song, gospel, pop, and many other styles throughout the years. I also like to make sure my students have a solid understanding in music theory and often give out worksheets that help them practice how to sight read, recognize different key signatures, and more.
