I was born and raised in Australia. I graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2000, and have since performed in a number of musicals and theatre productions in Oz, including Oklahoma, Les Miserables and The Vagina Monologues (2007 ITA Best Actress Award). As a critically acclaimed cabaret performer, I toured the cabaret and festival circuits in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth before moving to NYC last year. I am an Alumni of the International Cabaret Conference at Yale, won last year’s Annual Broadway Spring Festival Shana Farr Cabaret Competition and have since performed solo cabarets at the Metropolitan Room and The Duplex. Principally a stage performer, I've been teaching for about 5 years, beginning with a Master Class on Song Performance at the Shakespeare Theater Company. I've given individual lessons for about 2 years (professionally), specializing in musical theater and acting, helping young performers learn what I wish I had at their stage of career. I teach speech skills acquisition from a kinesthetic and descriptive basis rather than an arbitrary linguistic standard, in order to respect the individual and focus on what is fundamentally useful to the artistic process— “the ability to adapt”. My role is to add to a student's repertoire of skills, not to diminish the student's sense of what is appropriate or possible on stage. By explicitly addressing both the objective facts of vocal production and the subjective nature of vocal experience in my teaching, I help the students to free themselves to learn in a way that suits the individual situation. If students have an interest in learning popular styles, I make sure to incorporate reading jazz/pop symbols into their lessons. When students are able, I have them learn scales and key signatures. For my voice students, I find it most important to pick literature that will be healthy for students to sing, as well as enrich their vocal development. For younger students, I like to both work on folk songs and music theater, and appropriate popular music if they are interested. Read More
