I began studying voice in college, and found the piano background was an invaluable asset! I am both goal-oriented and open-ended with my students. At the beginning of lessons, I always check in with them to see how their progress was for the week and any questions or concerns that arose in their practice. I find this puts the ownership on them to reflect on their week of music making (and help them to remember that practice happens more than just in the lesson!). I believe music should be fun and the process of studying it should be fun. But like everything else, it has challenges, and I think the fun part should be finding solutions to those challenges. I will give them fun exercises and I will give them questions to think about. I like to set goals and assign exercises depending on their aural skills and vocal abilities. I try to help them push their limits as much as possible, but also learn about how to stay healthy and practice smart.
