I have been experiencing the love of playing and performing music for 40 years and still find it challenging to this day. Music is a journey of the senses which can open and expand our minds.For the first 11 years of my musical journey, I journeyed hours and hours in the discovery of the rhythms, notes and expression but I journeyed in solitude.What a wonderful joy wasawaiting me when I discovered how much fun it was to make music as part of an ensemble or as I like to think of it, a team.A musical team can be a band, an orchestra, a chorus, a churchchoir,a quartet, ora duet, and in all cases it is exhilarating to make music with other people.I hope that I can guide and encourage my students to learn to enjoy this journey that can provide a life time of adventure, social interaction and creativity. I first find out a little bit about my students musical likes and taste, or, with younger students, find somethingfun that interests them, just to find some common ground. I also find out a students long term goals. For instance, if a student seeks to be a opera singer as opposed to a worship leader, the training needs to be more pointed towards classical pieces and Arias instead of learning church music and how to engage a crowd. I want the student to be engaged so we will explore their interest so that they can apply to the style of music that they want to perform. I was an educator in the Seneca Falls Central Schools for 38 years where I first became an instrumental music teacher. I taught woodwind lessons grades 5-12 and conducted elementary and middle school bands. I coached high school woodwind groups and was assistant marching band director, as well as woodwind adjudicator for the NY State School Music Association.
