I think voice especially has always been viewed as a bit of a mystery... you can't see or touch your voice as you sing, unlike playing instruments, so there's a certain amount of imagination that has to be involved. I do my best to straddle making singing as tangible as I can, and approach things somewhat scientifically ("This muscle is used in this way," etc.) while also inspiring visualization ("Send your sound out into the distance," etc.) I also really think it's important for musicians to be diverse, so not only will we learn chord and strumming patterns on a guitar, we'll also learn how to read simple lead lines of solos, etc. Read More

I am a third-year undergrad at NYU, studying Music Education with a concentration in instrumental performanceand I love it! Currently, I am working on the last of my classwork before student teaching full time. I hope to graduate in May 2024 with a B.M. in Music Education and my NYSED pK-12 certification. Being a teacher is a very enjoyable and honorable job which I take seriously. I like to see my students progress and enjoy themselves at the same time. For that I create a plan for each student, which is divided into smaller groups I call goals. At the end of each goal I like to present the progress to each student so that they may realize the potential they have to grow as a musician and as a professional. Read More

I'm a fun, motivated and passionate instructor.  I graduated from McGill University's Schulich School of Music in 2009 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, with voice as my main instrument.  Since then I have been teaching and performing around New York at historic venues such as Birdland, The Plaza, Iridium, Bitter End, amongst others.  I have also recorded an album with Grammy nominated producer and arranger Rob Mounsey and perform with the world-famous Postmodern Jukebox.  I have taught a variety of genres, ages, and levels of students.  Through my performance, recording, and teaching experiences, I’ve acquired substantial knowledge to bestow on my students.  It’s a true gift to be able to share my love of music and to help my students reach their potential.   Read More

Instruments: Voice

I have a set of vocalises that I have comprised throughout the years. They begin with simple breathing exercises and hums to enable the student to connect to their breath, and move to more intricate scales and arpeggios to develop a strong, even tone. I choose repertoire that students truly enjoy to sing, as I have found that they will make great progress while practicing a song they love. When teaching children, I keep lessons simple and fun, while assigning exercises that they enjoy. Read More

My practice is an evidenced-based one. I chose exercises that are specifically tailored to a certain vocal idea or skill that we are working on. From there, we modify the exercise to meet the needs of the student's unique body and other student specific needs (i.e. previous habits, personality type, etc.). I generally use this approach across the board only modifying the level at which I am challenging the student to meet their current ability. Read More

...can add interesting sounds to your recorded guitar parts. The technology imitates effects delivered by amp makers Marshall, Orange, and Fender.   Midi Editing: Garage Band lets you edit and adjust notes generated by Midi files which can also be generated to look like the notes you’d see in music notation. For producers and songwriters wanting to add extra instrumentation to their demos, this feature is immensely helpful. The program also lets you quantize notes, which turns a sloppy synthesized instrument performance into one in perfect rhythm and feel at the touch of a button. Pitch and duration of notes can also be edited... Read More

...a terrific blues guitar scale that will help you get acquainted with the entire neck of the guitar. There are a few seemingly odd stretches with your fingers here, but it will all make sense once you start learning the scale. If you’re new to the guitar, don’t let this scale intimidate you. Other than the open string, the scale is built off of a repeating finger pattern of Index-Middle-Ring-Pinky on one string and then Index-Ring on the next. Practice this scale slowly to the beat of a metronome.     Improvising   Learning how to improvise is an essential skill for blues ... Read More

...strumming chords, arpeggios are notes from a chord that are played individually and in quick succession.     Rhythm Guitar Exercises   Having an extensive knowledge of chords and shapes is essential for any student wanting to become a proficient rhythm guitar player. Mastering transitions with simple chords in the first position such as Em and D is the first step, which should be followed by mastery of bar and extended chords up the neck of the guitar. No matter how challenging the chords might be to play, I highly recommend practicing transitioning from chord to chord in a very slow rhythm set to ... Read More

By “most common”, I mean that they are utilized the most in contemporary music.   Soprano Saxophone The soprano sax is a Bb instrument. It is the smallest of the four main saxophones.
