Even though Musical Theater is my first love, many of my students study a wide variety of music styles and bring personal storytelling skills to all music. Seven years ago my career as a musical theatre actor led me into the world of teaching and for that, I could not be more grateful. I have a great deal of experience working as both a voice teacher and a musical theatre teaching artist. As a voice teacher I have taught with Kathryn Brickell Music, Acting Out- Brooklyn's Premiere Acting School, as well as my own private studio. The greatest feeling is seeing my students build a stronger passion and appreciation for the art form! It's crucial for me that students are reminded that progression is made at his or her own pace. A common thing I notice from students is that some feel that others around them may seem to be ahead of them. My method of working with the voice is to first get a sense of what the student's goals are. These include both vocal goals and career/performance goals. We will then work together to form a plan to achieve them. This will include exercises tailored directly to the student's vocal needs and desires and guiding the student to repertoire that will both be fun for them to sing and will teach them more about the concepts we are working on. I try to relax the student first with body relaxation and breathing methods. We then do warm up vocal exercises to build the voice and then work on songs. I play the accompaniments on piano for them and they can record all of the lesson. I also do vocal coaching and incorporate acting methods. Piano students need to learn how to play basic songs first but then we can start to incorporate songs or other music they like into their lessons. Read More

For beginners on string instruments , I start with teaching them the major scale in the key of G, and then progressing to beginner songs. After a few songs are mastered, I ask each student to propose a song theyd like to learn based on their individual taste. For percussion, I focus on fundamentals such as proper sticking techniques and rudiments. Then I begin teaching them how to use the kit properly, as we work into basic rhythm, eventually progressing into learning songs. Read More
