The body is an important part of singing. My lessons often incorporate fun, sometimes silly but Always useful movement. I like to send students home with one challenge every week, and a larger challenge for every month. Success feels good for any student, and short term goals that tie in to long term goals are a good way to keep feeling inspired and developing a drive to succeed. Beginning Piano Students: I use three books in the Piano Adventures series: (Performance, Lesson, and Theory). I work composition into the lesson using the Orff-Schulwerk technique of elemental music creation. In addition, I supplement written musical work as needed. Voice Students: I interview all voice students first to see what their goals are in voice study. I then begin vocal study with the study of posture using Alexander Technique ideas, and a study of breathing and support techniques. Read More

The same applies for my vocal students. We will start with the fundamentals of our vocal instrument, air flow, breath support, and the components of the body that make up the vocal passage so they can understand how singing actually works. We will do vocal warm ups and exercises to open the voice and prepare them for singing. When they are ready, we will work on songs and vocal delivery as well as other techniques such as vibrato, solo's, harmonies, etc. Read More

Voice: I focus on strengthening vocal consistency with healthy vocal practices. I also want to strengthen the musicianship of singers by developing initial sight-reading and other aural skills. A lesson typically would consist of a third of vocalizing/warmups, and two-thirds of working on one to two songs to train the voice and build repertoire material. This will give the student a chance to really know if they want to play that particular instrument without having to go in renting blind. Singing is not the same as playing an instrument because you are the instrument. When I have a new student, they come in and we spend some time talking, singing, and breathing to see where they are at so that I can determine a lesson plan that is created specifically for them. As most people probably know singing requires good breathing, posture, tone and pitch and it's not a one size fits all. Read More

For my younger piano students, I am a fan of the Faber and Faber piano books. The method books applies to my philosphy of teaching rhythm in syllables (ta, ti-ti, etc.) and found success with all my students in their abilty to read notes and play well. I also love their arrangements on their jazz, rock and roll, and popular series. I also try to include composition in their learning to make it fun and challenging. Read More
