I have taught privately since 2006, though occasionally I will take two students from the same household, church or neighborhood and pair them up in what is known as a "partner lesson". Each person takes turns at the piano playing their respective scales, repertoire etc. and we offer one another encouragement as well as constructive criticism for those technical issues in need of improvement. I do hold seasonal recitals during Christmas and spring seasons as an outlet for my students to showcase the songs and pieces they have learned throughout the year. Read More

I use some custom lesson plans, including some of the following: For piano, I explain the music score to start elementary reading, work on hand and finger positioning, and move to simple scaler melodies. I introduce chord theory and understanding including triads, position changes, an later on sevenths and ninths. Exercises include scales for 1 and the 2 hands, Hanon exercises, and more. And we progress through elementary books. For guitar, I work on left hand positions and posture first, then right hand work - wrist position, pick strokes. Read More

Often, the song is in a different genre entirely!) Piano: I generally teach from the Alfred Beginning Piano series, and the Hanon book of 60 exercises, to build strength and dexterity in the fingers. Theory and sightreading is introduced on day-one, and emphasized in every lesson going forward. I will always recommend additional books that are tailored to your interests -- there are a few blues fakebooks I love to recommend, for example, as well as classical etudes, improv books, and more, all to help round out your education. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. It's important that each of my students progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
