I have taught privately since 2006, though occasionally I will take two students from the same household, church or neighborhood and pair them up in what is known as a "partner lesson". Each person takes turns at the piano playing their respective scales, repertoire etc. and we offer one another encouragement as well as constructive criticism for those technical issues in need of improvement. Any time I teach, I make sure to plan every lesson so that the student(s) can progress as far as possible every time they are learning with me. With school-age students, I use the Orff Schulwerk approach often, incorporating their own ideas into the lesson and having them learn through various senses (imagery, movement, games, etc.). I began teaching voice over 5 years ago and have maintained a studio of singers varying in vocal style, age, and skill level. Each one has brought new challenges to me as a teacher and helped me home in on my teaching style and methods. All students will always have at least one piece that they have chosen to work on to keep interest while building skills. For adults I like to use Alfred's Basic Adult All-In-One Course. This has a site that can be accessed at home for extra help and accompaniments to play the songs learned. I add technique to adults to keep the fingers moving such as Hanon and Czerny. Adults usually know what they are interested in learning and I point their instruction towards their personal goals. Read More

At the very beginning level I would start with fundamentals from whatever book I feel would be best for the student depending on their age and knowledge. Beforehand I definitely will need to asses their knowledge so I can do so accordingly. I however will now focus on solely fundamentals and will try to include in songs that the student would like to learn as long as it is in the bounds of reality, the lessons I provide are only part of the equation and the real work is what is put in after the lesson.
